Bruce Mulcahy seascape in acrylic 2015

Bruce Mulcahy gave a demonstration using artist quality acrylic, applied with a fairly small white nylon brush, on 200lb cold pressed Bockingford watercolour paper with a slightly rough random texture.

Bruce sketched the position of the main shapes from the photograph of boats in Staithes beck. He established the dark areas with a “black” made from cobalt blue and burnt umber.

IMG_6107

Bruce, working from dark to light, painted the similar areas of colour across the scene, creating a unified painting.

IMG_6113

Bruce worked through the painting methodically adding the larger areas, a light cobalt blue sky, grass and light sand.

IMG_6115

In the short time available, Bruce added detail to the houses and painted the boats.

IMG_6121

Painting at end of demonstration, needing an hour or so to refine.

Jeremy Taylor oil demonstration 2015

Landscape demonstration in oil paint on board.  The board was covered in a thin coat of Liquin so that the oil paint will spread without added turps or thinners and for quicker drying time.
The board was prepared with a basecoat of burnt umber acrylic so that some could be allowed to show through to brighten and unify the painting.
Jeremy applied the oil directly with small flat nylon brushes in a short multi directional strokes.

IMG_5958

Darker blues dabbed in with narrow brush.

IMG_5959

Dark mountains and terrain added and then Jeremy softened the clouds by dusting with a soft bristle brush, removing hard edges.

IMG_5961

Jeremy applied some creamy white dabs on the clouds, soften the edges and then applied a near white with a small pallet knife, then soften those cloud edges.

Jake Attree – oil pastels 2015

Demonstration at Farsley Art Club by Jake Attree. The source was a detailed tonal pen sketch of a landscape, as illustrated below. Mr Attree used short stroke hatching, often vertical, to build up picture elements.  The oil pastel painting is illustrated, although not finished.
Also illustrated are some tonal pen drawings from Mr Attree’s sketchbook and some of his recent oil pastel paintings.
